The video from DWP, below, illustrates how Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased the demand for applications of Universal Credit between January 2018 until the early weeks of the Coronavirus pandemic.

As new measures to control Coronavirus (COVID-19) are introduced Policy in Practice’s Head of Policy, Zoe Charlesworth, gave a recap of the major changes to the welfare system and explored their impacts in this webinar.

We were joined by special guest Victoria Todd, Low Incomes Tax Reform Group, who updated us on the latest changes to tax credits.

In addition, Megan Mclean shared some of the common questions we’ve received on our Coronavirus support page from people who are worried about their income. She explained the answers we’ve given, highlighting the complexity of what has become a dual welfare system.

Finally, Peter Carter briefly walked through software tools that help our clients to give the best advice possible to their customers.

Listen back to hear:

  • An overview of the COVID-19 changes and a look at some key issues
  • Recent developments and a focus on tax credits issues
  • The main concerns of people
  • How organisations are responding

In our submission, summarised in this blog post, we shared highlights from our work supporting thousands of claimants from late March to early April 2020.

Our submission was based on three main sources:

  1. Analysis of the impact of government measures to help households hit by Coronavirus (COVID-19)ย available here
  2. A systematic and personalised response to 1,209 people whose incomes have been affected by Coronavirus, and the measures put in place to contain it,ย available here
  3. Content from a Policy in Practice webinar attended by over 800 frontline organisations summarising the content below in an interactive video presentation with slides,ย available here
