Consultation on supported housing and benefit reform recently launched

The DWP consultation on supported housing and benefit reform is currently live.

The Government is looking to re-design the way in which Housing Benefit helps with the higher rents sometimes faced by the elderly or those with disabilities.  The Universal Credit in 2013 means that the Government needs to consider how supported housing costs can be met and whether they should be based on Local Housing Allowance principles.

The simplest system way to included supported housing under the Universal Credit would to have a supplementary Universal Credit award for those that need supported housing.  This consultation seeks to a) identify what qualifies as supported housing and b) how much this additional supplement should be.

The closing date for the consultation is 9 October 2011
