Contributory benefits retained under Universal Credit

Contributory benefits will be retained under a Universal Credit system, recognising that people should be able to access support after paying into the system.

People on contributory Employment and Support Allowance can earn up to £95.00 a week without their benefit being affected, whilst people on contributory Jobseeker’s Allowance are only permitted to earn £5.00 a week.  These earnings disregards will be consolidated under the Universal Credit and benefits will be withdrawn at the Universal Credit rate of 65p in the pound.

Contributory benefits are paid on an individual basis, while UC will be paid on a household basis, and the amount of Universal Credit awarded may vary based on personal circumstances.
